Over the holiday break, D88 learned of the untimely passing of three Plano High School graduates. The Plano School District Board of Education, administration and staff are extremely saddened by this news and send our condolences to their families and friends.

Come to the FREE Plano Food Pantry on Friday, November 17th, from 6-7:30 PM. All in need are welcome to walk or drive-thru the location at First Lutheran Church in Plano, 200 N Center Street. Fresh fruit, veggies, bread items, frozen meat, canned goods, milk, eggs and other goodies!

In 2016, an idea was sparked when a group of young farmers were looking for a way to give back and the Plano School District was looking for someone to maintain a 14.4-acre plot of land adjacent to Plano High School. The Kendall-Grundy Young Leaders committee sat down with the school district and discussed how they could use the plot to give back to the community. From there, “Farming for the Community” was born.
This year, the Young Leaders Committee donated $4,800 to support local food pantries; $1,000 to support the district’s high school foods classes; and $3,000 to support the Ag in the Classroom, a 4-H school enrichment program. With the remaining funds, the group funded and assembled back-to-school kits from Back 2 School America for every kindergarten student at P.H. Miller School.
Each year, the Young Leaders Committee reaches out to local ag suppliers seeking assistance with the farming project. One of the Young Leaders volunteers to plant, maintain and harvest the crop. Following the harvest, the committee meets with the school administration to discuss how to allocate the funds raised from the harvest. Over the past eight years, more than $50,000 has been raised through Farming for the Community to support area food pantries, ag education and other special projects.

At the October meeting, Plano School Board Member Jim Ward was recognized by his peers and the Illinois Association of School Boards for his participation in a number of professional development and leadership activities during his 10 years of service as a school board member.
IASB recognizes school board members who show a dedication and desire to learn more about local school governance, adding to their leadership skills, knowledge of state and national educational issues, and commitment to serving in trust of their community and their students.
Because of Jim’s ongoing commitment to continued learning and participation in leadership activities, he has earned the designation as an IASB Established Board Leader. IASB initiated the Board Leader Recognition Program both to honor the dedicated work of school board members and call public attention to the many responsibilities placed on local school boards.

Come dressed in pink to the "Pink Out Girls Vs. Boys Volleyball Tournament" special event on Friday, November 3rd at 7:00 PM. Proceeds from concessions and merchandise will be donated to a breast cancer survivor. The entrance fee is $1 for students and $3 for adults and the event is sponsored by the National Honor Society at Plano High School. Children 5 and under are free. Come cheer for your favorite team!
