Grading and Reporting
Grades K-6
Plano CUSD 88 uses standards-based grading for students in grades K-6. This method allows teachers to provide students and families with clearer, more meaningful feedback about academic progress.
Standards-based grading and reporting reflect how students perform in relation to specific, well-defined learning goals known as "standards." In Illinois, all public schools follow the Illinois Learning Standards. The goal of this grading approach is to highlight what students know and can do based on these established standards.
A key feature of this system is the clarity it provides to both teachers and students regarding the learning objectives—what students need to know and demonstrate to show they are on track. Another important aspect is the distinction between evaluating academic achievement and learning behaviors. In a standards-based framework:
The curriculum clearly outlines learning objectives and assessment criteria.
Learning targets are transparent and communicated to students.
Formative assessments are used to track progress and guide instruction.
Students have chances to improve in areas identified as needing support.
Summative assessments aligned to standards are used to evaluate learning after instruction.
The learning process and the final outcomes are reported separately.
This approach ensures that families receive accurate information about their child’s academic strengths and areas for growth.
