DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM

OUR MISSION AND VISION

Our mission is to help students become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural, preparing them to succeed in a diverse world. We are committed to fostering academic excellence through equitable dual language education while valuing the linguistic and cultural assets each student brings.

Our vision is to create a learning community where every child achieves bilingualism and biliteracy, excels academically in both languages, and gains a deep appreciation for cultural diversity. By the end of the program, students in Plano’s dual language program will demonstrate grade-level proficiency in both English and Spanish, academically and linguistically. They will develop a strong foundation to continue growing their academic, language, social, and cultural skills.

TWO WAY IMMERSION

Plano CUSD 88 offers a Two-Way Immersion program that begins in Kindergarten. The Dual Language Two-Way Immersion program consists of native English speaking students and native Spanish speaking students. Entrance into the program is based on an evaluation and application process.

Students are only eligible to enter into the Dual Language Two-Way Immersion program at the kindergarten level. If a student is coming from a Dual Language program in another district, he or she will be assessed to determine if the Dual Language program in the Plano School District is the best placement. Placement in the program will be determined on the student's abilities and if space is available. *Please indicate during registration if a student is coming from a Dual Language program in another district.

DUAL LANGUAGE COMMITMENT

The Dual Language Program is designed as a long-term commitment, based on research showing that students need multiple years of consistent instruction to become proficient in a second language. Regular attendance is essential for all students, and especially important for those enrolled in Dual Language. Building strong academic knowledge and communication skills in two languages is a gradual process that depends on continuous, in-person learning. The structure and goals of the program are grounded in research on second language acquisition and best practices, and are intended to ensure that students meet—or exceed—the academic performance of their grade-level peers who are not enrolled in Dual Language.

SPANISH ENRICHMENT

After 5th grade students will continue to be supported in monolingual English classrooms and provided opportunities for language and cultural enrichment.
