Plano School Board Welcomes Visitors in October

October 23, 2019

The Plano School District Board of Education was pleased to welcome special visitors to the October Board meeting held at P.H. Miller School.

Principal Laurel Mateyka (right) introduced Eagle Scout Nicholas Gerakaris.  Nicholas is a senior at Yorkville High School and the son of Mrs. Kari Gerakaris, who is a 1st grade teacher at PH Miller School.  For his Eagle Scout project, Nicholas learned that there was a need for a mobile library cart at P.H. Miller School, so he volunteered to help.  Mrs. Darlene Hallenbeck, the Learning Center Director at PH Miller, shared her vision with Nicholas and he designed and built the wooden cart for the school.  The cart, complete with wheels and a special laptop drawer, will allow Mrs. Hallenbeck to easily visit classrooms, read to the students and introduce them to new authors and books.  P.H. Miller staff and students are thankful to Nicholas for his donation to the school and wish him well in his future endeavors.

Mrs. Mateyka and Superintendent Baker were proud to welcome Mr. David Quiroz (left), the Bilingual Family Support Worker at P.H. Miller School.  David has been working on special ways to help family members become more active members of the school community and one of these new programs is WatchDOGS for students in grades PK-6.  DOGS stands for "Dads of Great Students" and the international program is designed to make it easy for fathers (or father figures) to spend meaningful time with their children in a school setting.  Mr. Quiroz will work closely with the school administrators to identify opportunities for WatchDOGS dads.  Over 160 fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other father figures attended the Plano School District Kickoff Event/Pizza Party and learned about the program, with the hopes that many will volunteer at least one day, all day, at their child's/student's school during the school year.  All volunteers must complete a brief application and pass a background check prior to entering the building.  Dads Victor Mendez (center) and Michael Lewis (second from right) attended the Board meeting and talked about their first volunteer experience.  They said everyone is committed to the success of the program and feel it will make a positive change in children's education at the elementary buildings.
