Letter from the Superintendent

August 12, 2013
Dear Staff and Community,   I’m excited to welcome you to the 2013-14 school year.  I hope you had an opportunity to spend quality time with your family and friends as well as re-energize for the new school year.  We have been hard at work making sure that we are ready to open schools at the same high standard that our Plano community has come to expect.  Our staff members did a great job this summer making sure that all of our facilities and grounds are ready to welcome students on Tuesday, August 20th.   Other staff members have been busy ensuring that we transition our new staff, provide professional development opportunities, and analyze our 2012-13 results.

When you improve a little each day, eventually big things occur…Don’t look for the quick, big improvement. Seek the small improvement one day at a time. That’s the only way it happens — and when it happens, it lasts.

~ John Wooden, Hall of Fame UCLA coach

As you can imagine, we found several areas of celebration as well as pockets of improvement.  Yet, as Coach Wooden stated, we need to stay focused on those high leverage practices that will not only produce the results that we expect for all of our students but will serve as the foundation for continuous success.  Therefore, we will look to build upon our past efforts to increase teacher collaboration around student achievement, maintain a school budget that is fiscally responsible, and continue to seek that each and every student feels challenged, supported, and most importantly inspired!   We will be starting this year’s journey on August 19th with a welcome breakfast for district staff members at 7:00 AM at the high school followed by a formal welcome at 8:00 AM in the main auditorium. Community members are invited to attend open house events at each of the schools: Centennial School – Monday, August 26 - 5:30-7 PM Plano High School – Monday, August 26 - 7-8:30 PM P.H. Miller School – Tuesday, August 27 - 6-7:30 PM Plano Middle School – Wednesday, August 28 - 6-7:30 PM Emily G. Johns School – Tuesday, September 3 - 6-7:30 PM   As I reflect on over two decades of being an educator, I strongly believe that our work in District 88 is incredibly valuable and most importantly I can’t be any happier to be charging up the hill with staff and community members like you!  I hope you have a wonderful start to the school year.   Hector Garcia, Ph.D. Superintendent
