Did you know that
certain animals are hatched from eggs? What do we call
animals that hatch from eggs? Your mission is to work
together in groups to find information on four different
animals that hatch from eggs.
The
Task
You and your group are
going to research information on four different animals that
hatch from eggs. After you are finished with your research,
you and your group are to write a report. Then your group
will give an oral report to the rest of the class. Make sure
to have these questions answered.
Is the animal a mammal,
reptile, fish, bird, insect, or
amphibian?
Where does the animal
live?
What does the animal
eat?
What does your animal
look like?
Which animal lays the
biggest egg? How big is it?
The
Process
1. First you
will be assigned to a group of 3 or 4
students.
2. Then as a class
you are to listen to your teacher read aloud Chickens
Aren't the Only Ones by Ruth Heller.
3. Do the worksheet
that is called "Chicken's Aren't the Only
Ones".
4. Fill in table that
your teacher will hand out. This will help organize your
work.
5. Do the activity
"Sizing Up Eggs" as a group. Your teacher will hand out
this activity.
6. Click on to these
links to find more information.
7. Each student must
print a copy of the Egg Fact Sheet. Click on the picture
of the egg to get to that page.
8. After you have
filled in the table and finished all activities, put all
your work in a folder that your teacher will give you.
9. Pick one of the
animals that you will talk about. Each student in your
group will talk about one of the animals you
researched.

Teacher
Rubric
This rubric will help
your teacher grade the hard work you did. Press on the
picture of the hatching egg. Print out one rubric for each
student in your group. Print your name at the top of the
rubric, then give it to your teacher.
Conclusion
After finishing this
project, you will have learned that animals that lay eggs
are called oviparous. Animals that lay eggs are reptiles,
birds, amphibians, fish, and insects. There are only three
mammals that lay eggs. Can you name them?
