To Plano High School Parents/Guardians:

This week, we have answered parent and student concerns, about a Facebook picture from last Sunday that mentioned a threat at the high school for this Friday.  As we have mentioned to those parents and students; we, along with the Plano Police Department, don’t have any credible evidence to support the threat, we are going to increase our vigilance tomorrow, and continue to closely monitor the situation.  We plan to have additional support from the Plano Police Department on campus and in the area throughout the school day.  We look forward to providing a safe environment for your students tomorrow and everyday for the remainder of the school year.  We look forward to a terrific remainder of the school year.

Sincerely,

Eric M. Benson, Principal

Plano High School

Sinceramente,

Eric M. Benson, Principal

Dear Plano Middle School Families,

Ensuring a safe school environment exists for our students to achieve academic success and experience personal growth is a high priority for the staff at Plano Middle School.  It is essential that we are able to work together with families to provide the safe environment our students deserve.  Today, Tuesday, March 7, 2016 a note was turned in by a student to school staff that suggested a threat against the safety of our school community.  Plano Middle School’s staff takes all rumors and threats seriously, and our team immediately initiated protocol to investigate the issue.

The investigation resulted in the following:

The student who turned the note in to school staff admitted they were also the person who wrote the note.  Their motivation was, they believed school would be cancelled if there was a concern of a threat of school violence.  The student thought they would be able to get away with this because they were the student who turned the note in and they would not be suspected.  There is no evidence of a threat to the safety of our students.

While I am relieved to report that this incident was a student making a poor choice in a ploy to get a day off school, I cannot help but think about how this could have been prevented.  In addition to the student who wrote this, other students were involved in encouraging it.  As parents and educators we must educate our children on making better choices when confronted with rumors or topics that can incite safety issues.  Unfortunately, not every student understands that “kidding around” or spreading rumors can have a widespread impact on a whole school community.  This is were we can work together to empower our students to speak up before their friends make poor choices and share important information with adults.  When students choose not to speak up, rumors and actions may go beyond their control leading to unnecessary concern or legal ramification for any students involved.

I wanted to share this information with you to encourage you to speak with your child about standing up for what is right when they see others making poor choices, and the impact their words and actions can have on others.  The Plano Middle School staff wants to continue to keep open lines of communication with our families.  Our students’ safety, education, and development remains our top priorities.

Sincerely,

Mark Heller, Principal

Dear Parents,

Sunday afternoon reminded us that safety and timely communication is essential, but only if we stay on the same page. At approximately 1 pm, we received notice that someone had posted a picture of a sentence that was written on the mortar of a high school wall. The sentence threatened violence on March 10th. We quickly dispatched staff members to identify the exact location as well as review the rest of the facilities. After a cursory review, we noticed that we did not find any other location other than the bathroom. Since we don’t have students tomorrow (March 6th) at school, we will continue to search the rest of the building.

This incident brings up an important point on when and how we will communicate safety issues. In today’s world, we will continue to take every threat, inappropriate comment, and rumor very seriously. Unfortunately, as you know, not every student understands that “kidding around” or spreading malicious rumors can be incredibly time consuming and potentially dangerous. Therefore, we will continue to investigate and take appropriate safety measures with every rumor, social media posting, and tip. Yet, in order to avoid desensitizing parents to important messages, we will continue to only send mass messages when we have credible or substantiated evidence of danger. For example, if the police inform us that there is a serious threat or we find anything that can put kids in danger, we will send information out as soon as possible.

If we can’t substantiate a rumor or an isolated comment, we will heighten security nonetheless and inform the Plano Police Department. As you would expect, we will once again be very vigilant this week and on March 10th, but will avoid a mass notification unless we identify any credible evidence. We obviously want to continue to keep the lines of communication open and follow-up on any rumors or possible threat, so please continue to feel free to send that information to our administrative team. Your kids’ safety remains the number one priority of our schools.

Sincerely,
Dr. Hector Garcia, Superintendent

Estimados Padres,

Sinceramente,

Dr. H. Garcia, Superintendente
