Winners at EGJ

Math Contest

The fifth grade math classes at Emily G. Johns Intermediate School, Plano, Illinois participated in the 2009 National Math Contest sponsored by The Education League.  They competed against other fifth grade classes throughout the Midwest region in a series of four tests to be awarded the honor of Division Champions.  They were then advanced to the National round. Even though they eventually were defeated in this round, their scores were very competitive---even tying the eventual National winner in the final round. For these efforts, they were awarded the Division Champion plaque. Christian E. accepted the plaque from Mrs. Matejka on behalf of the team. Lucas T. was awarded an individual trophy for achieving the highest individual score in the divisional rounds.Everyone at Plano CUSAD #88 is incredibly proud of the accomplishments of our students.

Battle of the Books

Students at Emily G. Johns Intermediate School competed in the "Battle of the Books".  Any student who had read a minimum of three of the twenty books nominated for the Rebecca Caudill Book Award were eligible to participate on one of the teams.  A total of nine teams competed during the months of May and June.  Students competed Jeopardy style by answering questions about those twenty books. The contest was conducted by Mrs. Hill-Emery, our school Learning Center Director. After many rounds of quarter finals and then finals between the winning fifth and sixth grade teams, the winning team in the school was a fifth grade team of Robert J., Isaac B., Christian E., Hugo N., and Livia W.
